Spartan Race Makes Its Khao Yai Debut
No Six-Pack Required. Just Guts
Get ready, Khao Yai. One of the world’s most epic obstacle course races is charging into Thailand’s most iconic highland for the very first time — and it’s already breaking records.
The 2025 Khao Yai Spartan Race Weekend (Thailand National Series), presented by AccessXtreme, is set to electrify the region on July 12–13, and excitement is already running wild. Within days of opening, every category was sold out — from the intense Super 10K, the fast and furious Sprint 5K, to the mud-loving, energy-packed Kids Races (0.8–3.2K).
More than 3,500 competitors from across the globe have signed up, making this a history-making moment: Khao Yai’s first time hosting a globally licensed Spartan event. And it’s all happening at the spectacular Parco by The Bonanza, a venue as wild and rugged as the race itself.
You’ve probably heard of the Spartans—those legendary warriors from ancient Greece. Fearless. Ruthless. Unbreakable. That same spirit lives on today, not in battlefields, but in mud, sweat, and steel. The Spartan Race isn’t just a run—it’s a test of raw strength, iron will, and mental grit.
And now, that test is coming to Khao Yai in full force.
According to Thanupol Teerasupaset, Managing Director of AccessXtreme (AXT)—or “Benz,” as he’s known in the OCR world—bringing Spartan to Khao Yai is more than just a location decision. It’s a carefully crafted mission.
“AXT was granted the exclusive rights to host the Khao Yai leg in partnership with Runrio Thailand, the main license holder in the country,” Benz explains.
“We’re not just hosting—we’re managing the entire experience, from course design and logistics to working closely with the local community. Our goal is to deliver a world-class race that brings global energy to Thai soil.”
“When selecting a Spartan venue, we look for terrain that dares you to dig deeper—dense forests, rolling hills, raw and untamed nature,” Benz explains.
“But that’s just the beginning. The site must also have strong infrastructure—accessibility, accommodations, food, water and power systems—and, most importantly, a supportive local community. Khao Yai checks every box. It offers stunning views, reliable safety, and the capacity to host thousands of racers from around the world.”
That’s why Khao Yai was chosen as the newest battleground for Spartan Thailand.
Spartan first set foot in Thailand in 2017, and between then and 2024, it’s held 1–2 events annually. But 2025 marks a bold new step. With four races planned across the country, Khao Yai’s race on July 12–13 at Parco by The Bonanza stands out—not only as the first in the Isan region, but also as an official stop in the Thailand National Series.
- And the challenges? Designed for every warrior type:
- Sprint – 5 km + 20 obstacles: perfect for first-timers.
- Super – 10 km + 25 obstacles: a test of mid-level grit.
- Kids Race – 0.8 to 3.2 km + age-appropriate obstacles: because little Spartans deserve to conquer too.
A Course for Anyone Brave Enough to Show Up
So, what does it take to become a Spartan?
“Honestly? You don’t need to be a pro athlete. You just need to be an ordinary person with an extraordinary mindset,” Benz says with a grin.
“The race categories are designed to suit all fitness levels. You don’t need to be the strongest—just someone willing to step up and try. Once you cross that start line, you’ll get it. Spartan isn’t about being the fittest. It’s about being bold enough to challenge yourself.”
In a world overflowing with events and experiences, Spartan stands out—not because it picks the best, but because it reveals the toughest.
“We don’t choose champions. We choose the ones who refuse to quit,” Benz adds.
“Those who fall but get back up. Those who don’t mind getting dirty, tired, or tested. Spartan isn’t just for athletes—it’s for warriors in every form.”
“You don’t need a six-pack.
You don’t need to have run a marathon.
All you need is the will to grow, the curiosity to try something new, and the grit to crawl through mud, climb walls, swing from bars, or carry heavy loads.
That’s the true qualification of a Spartan—someone who dares to step outside their comfort zone in search of who they really are.”
Preparing for the race doesn’t require perfection—just intention.
“No one starts 100% ready,” Benz reminds us.
“But everyone can start. Begin with 2 km runs a few days a week. Do some push-ups. Try hanging from a bar or lifting light weights. That’s already enough to set your feet on the path toward the finish line.”
Transform Your Body. Reshape Your Mind.
“We’re not looking for the fastest.
We’re looking for the ones who never stop moving, even when it’s hard,” Benz says.
“Spartan doesn’t just change your body—it transforms your mind. It makes you braver. More resilient. It teaches you to believe in yourself like never before.
If you’re searching for the most life-defining challenge—something that brings you face to face with your true self—this is it. Take the first step. Then watch your new self rise from the course.”
But before you lace up, here are a few things to know.
Every obstacle is meant to be conquered. But if you can’t get through one? You’ll pay for it—30 burpees or a penalty loop, depending on the rules.
In competitive categories like Age Group or Elite, outside help is not allowed.
You must wear your numbered headband throughout the race and follow all event safety protocols. Spartan doesn’t just test your strength. It demands your integrity.
And here’s the kicker:
You won’t know the course in advance.
You won’t know the placement of obstacles.
You won’t even know the weather.
“That’s what makes it Spartan,” Benz explains.
“Every unexpected twist, every muddy trench, every climb—it’s all part of the unknown that you’re meant to overcome.”
Khao Yai Poised to Become Spartan’s Flagship Venue in Southeast Asia
Spartan isn’t just growing—it’s surging. Both in Thailand and across the world, the movement has captured the imagination of a new generation hungry for challenge, adventure, and the deep pride that comes from pushing past limits.
“Spartan fits perfectly with today’s lifestyle,” Benz explains.
“People want more than fitness—they want transformation. And Thailand, especially Khao Yai, is ready to become a magnet for OCR athletes from across the region and beyond.”
With its blend of nature, infrastructure, and raw challenge, Khao Yai could soon become a pillar of Spartan racing in Southeast Asia—a race destination etched into the global calendar.
But the impact won’t stop at the finish line.
“Each event generates millions of baht in local economic activity,” Benz points out.
“Hotels, resorts, homestays, restaurants, community vendors, gear suppliers, sound crews, media, local labor, volunteers—they all benefit.
At AccessXtreme, we’re committed to making this more than a race. We want Spartan to uplift the Khao Yai economy and promote sustainable sports tourism that lasts.”
“We’re expecting over 3,500 participants from Thailand and around the world,” Benz shares.
“It’s not just about sport—it’s about activating the local economy through tourism, job creation, and long-term investment.
This is more than a race. It’s the foundation of something bigger—our vision to make Khao Yai a central Spartan hub for all of Southeast Asia.”
And while racers will go home with medals, shirts, and unforgettable photos, it’s the experience that truly lasts.
“What matters most is the pride of conquering yourself,” he says.
“Spartan is more than a competition—it’s a community of people who choose challenge over comfort, who support one another, and grow together.”
This is the spirit that AccessXtreme (AXT) is building in Thailand—not just by bringing the race, but by showing up, boots on the ground, working with the local community to ensure every event leaves a legacy.
“Our mission is to grow a strong, sustainable OCR (Obstacle Course Racing) community in Thailand,” Benz concludes.
“We believe Spartan—and extreme sports—can become more accessible to Thai people by blending fitness, tourism, and lifestyle. This is where sport becomes impact.”
